Global Mission at our Doorstep
Monday, 01 September 2025
Australia’s changing cultural landscape is bringing more diaspora communities into our neighborhoods - people who have left their country of origin and now call Australia home. This global mission field begins not overseas, but right in our own neighbourhoods.
In recent years, Australia has welcomed growing migrant and diaspora communities from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. These communities bring rich cultural heritages and often a deep spiritual hunger to know the truth. Yet many face significant challenges - disconnection, loneliness, and cultural barriers that make integration into Australian society difficult.
Churches across Australia are recognising that the mission field is no longer just “over there,” but also “right here.” In response, SIM has partnered with local churches to share the Gospel with ethnic communities in Australia, bridging cultural gaps and demonstrating Christ’s love and compassion.
SIM’s mission has long focused on reaching the least reached. Alan Millhouse, Across Ministries Lead with SIM Australia explained:
“Migration has brought individuals and their families from countries where the Gospel is often inaccessible. However, in places such as Australia, God is working powerfully in allowing the least reached to hear about Jesus right at our doorstep.”
Bridging the Diaspora through English classes
One example of this local mission in action is found in Brisbane’s north. After years of serving overseas in the Philippines with SIM, Jay and Robyn Knight returned to Australia with a heart to continue serving cross-culturally. Seeing a great need in their own neighbourhood, they partnered with Hills Church and SIM’s Across ministry to launch an English class.
This ministry didn’t happen overnight. Jay and Robyn had been praying about it for two years before approaching Hills Church’s pastor, Nathan Bell—who had also been praying for such a ministry.
“Before we even arrived, the Lord was preparing the way. The church has been incredibly supportive. We've even witnessed people become Christians,” Robyn shared.
Their pastor, Nathan also added:
“This was a prayer of mine long before Jay and Robyn moved to Brisbane - that we would be a church that engages better with the increasing diversity we're experiencing on the north side of Brisbane, and it's now happening. What a privilege it is for God to trust us with these precious people.”
Since launching in April 2023, the ministry has grown from 8 to 44 students from China, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Iran and Colombia. These classes have become a powerful bridge for migrants who once felt isolated - now building relationships and experiencing the love of Christ.
The partnership between Hills Church and Across has provided support in many ways: raising up volunteers, printing materials, hospitality, morning tea and translation apps so students can hear the Gospel in their heart language. Hills Church’s pastoral team has also been actively involved in sharing God’s Word with the community. Nathan added:
“As a pastor who loves to see the local church engage our neighbourhood with the practical love of Jesus, I've been delighted to see the English ministry help so many. I love seeing this group walk onto the church property each week, find friendship, learn English and Australian culture, and for some, respond to the Good News of Jesus.”
Volunteers have found their own lives transformed through serving. Jenni Pack shared:
“I learn about other cultures, and I’m inspired by the students’ eagerness. We’ve shared stories, played Mahjong, and built friendships. I know each volunteer feels the same way - whether providing morning tea, childcare, classroom support, or tutoring - it’s become a highlight of our week.”
How can I be involved in diaspora ministry?
Across offers serving opportunities for those with a heart for the least reached - whether locally in Australia or as preparation for future overseas work. Individuals and churches can engage in tangible ministry within migrant and diaspora communities. SIM provides the cultural insight and relational experience needed for effective cross-cultural ministry.
