Walking Beside Those Who Serve Through Member Care
Wednesday, 18 March 2026
As we celebrate 100 years of mission through SIM Australia, we reflect on the countless men and women that have served alongside SIM and shaped our story. These SIM workers have been supported by faithful people.
In the past, caring for workers happened through prayer and handwritten letters. Today, a new generation are answering God's missional call in a more interconnected, complex, and sometimes more fragile world.
SIM has recognised the importance of holistic member care and made this a significant priority globally, to support the long-term ministry work and lives of workers.
SIM Australia’s member care team supports our workers in every stage of their journey, to nurture those God has called to serve in least reached communities and make His Name known.
The team continues to grow as they learn to serve in new ways. In partnership with teams on the field, member care has integrated spiritual direction to care in real-time. This allows our workers and their families to navigate global transitions and the challenges experienced on the field, with consistent support enabled by the Internet and modern technology.
There are new systems for recruitment, orientation, cross-cultural training and professional development. In prioritising member care, we have also grown our resources for pastoral care, spiritual direction, support for emotional and relational wellbeing, debriefing, encouragement and more.
Doreen Thomas, Personnel Director for SIM Australia, serves in this team. In 2025 she spent three weeks in South Asia on an international member care visit to a SIM family and several ministry teams.
“I was able to encourage, pastorally listen, debrief, reflect and pray with them. The visit allowed me to understand deeply the unique challenges and joys experienced by our workers in cross-cultural ministry. It has been a privilege to care for them and hear their stories so they can grow in resilience in the places God has called them."
SIM Australia is committed to a future of continued support, walking alongside our people with wisdom and grace. Our vision is to see these workers fully equipped to thrive on the field and live out God's purposes in the world.
