The relationship between SIM and your sending church

When someone joins SIM as a mission worker, they are ‘sent’ by their church. SIM does not replace the primary responsibility a church has for global mission and for its mission worker. SIM provides further support to the worker and assists the church in caring for them holistically.

SIM serves the sending church by taking responsibility of logistical, financial and medical responsibilities, as well as helping manage any security risks. In addition to the pastoral care the mission worker receives from their sending church, SIM offers essential member care and training. Indeed, SIM and the church combine their efforts together to ensure the needs of our mission workers are met.

  • The role of the church:

The church is the structure that God put in place for the growth of His people and the proclamation of His name to the nations, from generation to generation. We believe the local church is the one who sends mission workers and supports ministry work abroad. They are also involved in the spiritual care of the mission worker, as well as part of helping the worker prepare for the mission field.

  • The role of a mission organisation:

The mission sending organisation’s primary focus is to identify needs, train and prepare people for global mission work. Organisations such as ours have staff with experience and expertise in living and ministering in a cross-cultural context. We will help you with getting proper visas, provide training on cross-cultural living and language acquisition. We are here to equip and prepare people for mission work.

  • Working in partnership:

The church and mission sending organisation both play a role in caring for the mission worker while in their placement location. At SIM, we have people who understand some of the specific struggles of living cross-culturally and help with problem-solving, and provide expertise and support. The sending church personally knows the mission worker on a deeper level and can care in different ways than we can as the mission organisation. We believe that partnership between the church and SIM is essential for the health and effective service of the mission worker.
